Welcome to Karuna Compost – a project that is exploring the various ways in which backyard composting and the study of microbes can lead to better health, stronger communities, and a greater appreciation of living systems.
Plants rely on a dynamic community of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungus, protozoa and nematodes. All of which help the plant get nutrients from the soil, and protect against disease.
Some plants require more bacteria in the soil, while others prefer more fungus. Most of our cereal crops, for example, like a F:B ratio of 1:1
Like humans, biological organisms need food, water, and shelter. Good company and nice weather help too!
Microscopy allows us to monitor the changing populations of biology in the soil, and make adjustments to promote a healthy growing environment.
